John O Connor & Anthony Mellor – Live Bunjies: Soho 1992

“Step into the hallowed, cramped cellar of 27 Litchfield Street. It’s 1992, and the ghost of Bob Dylan still hangs in the smoky air. This raw, intimate four-track collection captures John d O Connor, accompanied by Anthony Mellor on a classic Yamaha DX7, performing a set of purely original music at the legendary Bunjies Coffee House & Folk Cellar.

Track 1: “Whirlwind Love”

The Vibe: An energetic and confident opener. This is classic upbeat folk-rock songwriting with an early 90s edge.

The Musicality: The acoustic guitar provides a driving rhythm. Anthony Mellor’s keyboard work (the DX7 sound is very evident here) adds essential texture, providing bright melodic lines that elevate the track from “acoustic demo” to a fully realized song arrangement.

The Songwriting: The hooks are strong. The phrase “Whirlwind Love” is memorable and effective.

Track 2: “Sinners of Fortune”

The Vibe: Moody, atmospheric, and compellingly dark. A great dynamic shift from the opening track.

The Musicality: This track highlights the successful synergy of the duo. The DX7 is crucial here, creating deep, resonant synth-bass textures and atmospheric pads that ground the acoustic performance. The slightly minor-key feel creates an evocative, brooding environment that fits the “cellar club” vibe perfectly.

The Songwriting: This feels more mature and philosophical, exploring heavier themes than the standard love song.

Track 3: “Phone Calls You”

The Vibe: An intimate, vulnerable ballad. This is the quietest moment in the set.

The Musicality: The guitar work is delicate, and the vocal delivery is close and heartfelt. Anthony’s accompaniment is subtle but crucial, providing melodic accents (almost like tuned bells or an electric piano) that complement the soft dynamics of the performance.

The Songwriting: Captures a very relatable sense of disconnection or longing, typical of great singer-songwriter material.

Track 4: “Beautiful Friend”

The Vibe: Uplifting and comforting. The perfect song to close the set on a positive, resonant note.

The Musicality: A strong melodic identity. The DX7 synth provides a shimmering, almost pastoral quality that contrasts beautifully with the rhythmic guitar foundation. The dynamics build well, providing a strong sense of closure.

The Songwriting: Solid craft. The lyric feels authentic, and the melody sticks.
